Tui na Therapy
Like the practice of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years. Natural Chinese herbs are typically prescribed in combinations such that the ingredients balance each other, providing a mutual synergy which increases their efficacy and enhances safety. This approach goes beyond just covering up symptoms and aims to correct internal imbalances and assist the body’s innate self-healing processes. Herbal treatments are a safe, cost effective treatment option, especially for people who wish to avoid or stop taking prescription drugs.
Cupping therapy has been part of Chinese medicine for over 2,500 years. It involves the use of special cups that are placed on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. The result is a movement of fresh blood and oxygen to the surrounding area which releases toxins, increases drainage of toxins through the lymphatic system, relaxes tight muscles, and reduces inflammation. It also acts as a type of deep-tissue massage, and can help with pain, blood flow, inflammation, relaxation, and wellbeing. Cupping is most often used for aches and pains including low back, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension, and fibromyalgia. It also helps open up the chest and benefits the lungs to address respiratory problems from common colds, bronchitis, and even asthma. It can also improve digestive ailments including stomach aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
Another time honored Chinese healing modality, moxibustion evolved thousands of years ago in early northern China around the same time as acupuncture. Moxibustion involves the burning of moxa, an herbal wool made from the leaves of the Mugwort plant, over specific acupuncture points or large areas of the body. The heat produced by moxibustion penetrates deeply into the body to reduce pain, promote circulation, and restore balance. Moxibustion can be useful for improving general health and wellbeing, and in conjunction with other methods may be used to help address pain, arthritis, digestive disorders, infertility, and more. There is a smokeless moxa option for people with asthma or respiratory problems, so be sure to inform your practitioner if you have these or related issues.
Tui na Therapy
Tui na is a form of Chinese manipulative therapy that uses Chinese taoist and martial art principles to bring the body to balance. The practitioner may rub, brush, knead, press, and roll the areas between each of the joints to open the body’s defensive chi and get energy moving in the muscles and meridians. The practitioner may combine this with range of motion, traction, and/or massage, along with the stimulation of acupressure points. Tui na is said to treat acute and chronic conditions, including both musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal conditions.
The Standard American diet combined with the fast-paced Western lifestyle often gives rise to poor choices and fails to provide the nutrition our bodies need. As a result, we see deterioration in the quality of people’s lives in the form of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, arthritis, cancer, and other issues - not only in adults but in our children as well. On the flip side, proper nutrition provides a foundation of good health and disease prevention. Illness, inflammation, and symptoms can be powerfully managed with dietary changes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, your practitioner determines the energetic and therapeutic properties of food, season, geographical location, and your chief complaint. This information is used to customize a nutritional plan to promote healing and prevent disease.
