Dr. Oz: Healthy fats diet boosts weight loss!
As seen on the Dr. Oz show, he has recently featured several experts who advocate eating a high fat diet for health and weight loss, such as Dr. David Perlmutter’s “Grain Brain” diet. On his Feb. 7 talk show, Dr. Oz revealed the latest research stating that healthy fats can actually boost your weight loss and burn calories faster.
First, eat monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAs. These include avocado, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts like cashews, almonds and pecans, nut butters and dark chocolate. A study from the American Diabetic Association found that eating a diet rich in MUFAs reduces belly fat.
How much should you eat? It is recommends choosing a serving with each meal and consuming 50 percent of your calories from fat in the form of MUFAs. Sample portions:
A quarter avocado
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons nuts
2 tablespoons nut butter, such as Barney Butter Almond Butter 90 Calorie Snack Packs
A quarter cup of dark chocolate chips, such as Ghirardelli Chocolate Baking Chips, 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate
The second step to this diet: Eat PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids). Found in fatty fish such as salmon, seaweed, some seeds and sunflower oil, PUFAs boost the metabolism while breaking down fat cells. The latest study showed these healthy fats increased weight loss in obese women.
For optimal results, include at least two PUFA-rich foods into your meals every day. Here are some good examples:
3 ounces of fish
Seaweed snacks, such as Annie Chun’s Seaweed Snacks, Roasted Sesame
A shot glass of pine nuts
1 ounce of sunflower seeds, such as Bob’s Red Mill Natural Raw Sunflower Seeds
2 tablespoons of sunflower seed oil
